It is important in this day and age to have a blog on your website or to have a blog off-site. Blogs help you communicate important information to your customers, investors and/or others who may be seeking to know more about your company. A blog is a great business tool, because it helps you increase your transparency to the world – it gives them an alternative view into your business and/or personality (if setting up a personal blog).

Setting Up WordPress 3.0 On Your Own Website

For optimal performance, visibility and in order to have full control over your blog, we strongly recommend you setup WordPress on your own website/domain.  The WordPress 3.0 software download and installation isn’t too difficult, but there are many advanced features & plug-ins that can be added to improve how your blog functions/works.

Custom WordPress themes are possible on your own website, but the blogs on WordPress.com come with a limited choice of theme designs.  Want your blog to look just like your existing website?  Choose a hosted version of WordPress on your own domain in order to have full design capabilities.

Jen Kaufman Designs can create a custom WordPress 3.0 theme based on your existing website for as little as $350.00.  When it comes to looking professional and being consistent, a custom WordPress theme is highly recommended.

Setting Up a WordPress.com Blog

If you don’t have your own domain and/or can’t install WordPress 3.0 on your hosting platform, you have the option to setup a blog on WordPress.com.  A blog setup here won’t present all the same customized opportunities you’d have if you hosted your own WordPress installation, but it is still one of the best hosted blogging platforms.

One of the features not available to you on WordPress.com is plugin installation.  There are literaly thousands of WordPress plugins available to help improve how your blog works, but these can’t be installed without hosting your own blog.

You’re also limited in the number of WordPress themes that you can choose from when you install on WordPress.com, so if you need a custom WordPress design, you should choose to install it on your own server/domain.

Despite these limitations, there are some benefits of keeping your blog on WordPress.com, including backlinks from an external domain and the ability to get traffic from the WordPress site when people are searching for tags and keywords.
